How are disabled preschoolers not a priority?

This recent article reported that preschool students with special needs in Indiana have received the same minuscule amount of funding for 25 years. Let that sink in. For more than two and a half decades, these children have received the same amount of money despite the cost of living increases, inflation, etc. Crucial educational programs, such as those in place for students with special needs, should be a priority.

While our disabled preschoolers are left to make due with the same $2,750 from the state since 1991, Indiana spent $153 million for the 2017-18 school year to allow more than 34,000 students receive state money to attend private school.

Here are some facts about how lawmakers are spending your tax money:

  • Indiana has one of, if not the most, expansive voucher programs in the country thanks to a bill introduced by Rep. Behning and Rep. Huston which passed in 2013.
  • Students don’t have to attend a failing school to be eligible for state funds.
  • In fact, more than half of all voucher students in the state have no record of attending a public school.
  • Families earning $90,000 a year can still be eligible for voucher money.

Instead of funding students who were never going to attend public school in the first place, it’s time for Indiana to take the lives of the 13,066 students who qualify for special education preschool services into consideration. An increase in funding to those in need = an increase in the quality of these children’s lives, which is priceless.
